When researchers create more functions for fibers and yarns, the knitted textile maybe no longer just a grandma’s hobby. New report on ‘Science Advances’ shows that the researchers create a new kind of intelligent fiber which can control the movement.
The scientists use a special polymer named PPY (polypyrrole) coating on the surface of cellulose yarn. They found that this smart fabric can resist the huge force, whereas the knitting pattern could extend. Because they found that the polypyrrole can deform and elongate in electricity.
In order to test the function, scientists make this material into a sleeve and set it on the arm of a little LEGO activity. The arm can move and even raise a heavy object of 2 gram after wearing the sleeve.
The researchers also said that this application is just the beginning for this new intelligent fiber and yarn. This technology can be extended for many other materials to make the final textile more practical and more effective.
